The metamorphosis which produces the butterfly is perhaps nature's most extraordinary phenomenon. In the first stage, caterpillars emerge from single eggs or batches laid near food sources. Their heads, attached to soft, long bodies, are adapted with chewing mouth parts. They feed on plant life, according to their species. In the next stage, called the pupa, the caterpillar encloses itself within a cocoon or case where it undergoes changes from larval structures to butterfly features. This stage may last from a few weeks to several months. Then comes the emergence of the butterfly with double wings and antennae. This adult can survive for months, but most only live for a few weeks.

The Natchez Trace Parkway runs from Natchez, MS, to Nashville, TN. Its interesting history first began as a trail traveled by large wild animals. Prehistoric settlements arose along it. Later Native Americans used the Old Trace for trade. During the early 19th century it became a well-traveled trade route for traders returning from New Orleans. After technology allowed them to return by boat on the Mississippi River, the Trace fell out of use for trade purposes. Today it continues to attract many admirers of its natural beauty and serene atmosphere.

The sea turtle helps prevent beach erosion by eating algae which produce stronger vegetation and root systems. Sea turtles hatch from soft-shelled eggs. After laying her eggs in the nest she has dug in the beach, the female covers her eggs with sand. She pays no further attention to the nest while the sun's heat hatches the eggs within two months. Sea turtles are in greatest danger just after hatching. Many creatures devour them as they crawl to the sea.

Dragonflies can be seen on warm, sunny days flying over almost any body of fresh water. There are about 307 species found in North America. They are helpful to man since their diet consists of some harmful insects, such as mosquitoes. Dragonflies sometimes devour smaller insects while in flight. Their characteristic perch is with the double wings spread out flat. Several species migrate annually, flying great distances.

Egrets are found in freshwater and salt marshes, as well as tidal flats, where they build nests of sticks in trees or bushes. They usually nest in colonies, sometimes with other species of herons. They may wander far north of their breeding grounds. The egret's diet consists of fish and creatures that live near water. The demand for its plumes once created a significant threat to the egret's survival. Fortunately that threat no longer exists.

The Eastern Bluebird is a testimony to man's positive contribution to wildlife conservation. Today this beautiful species can be found throughout the Eastern United States, recovered from a steep decline in numbers during the mid-twentieth century. Man-made bluebird houses helped to make this recovery possible. The Eastern Bluebird's royal blue head and wing feathers are paler than the Western species. Its underparts, throat, and neck are rufous-colored with a white belly. The diet is mainly carnivorous, augmented with berries in winter. If they can find adequate winter food and cover, Eastern Bluebirds may not migrate.

I've photographed all my deer in the State Parks here in mid to north Florida. It is easy to just go where there are a ton of deer that walk up a human dirt road but to get a Buck walking through the swamp in the wilderness that is not spooked is much harder. I wear full camo that is light and wicks as well as camo boots and cap with face cover and mosquito net over my head. camo from head to toe and on my camera as well. Then get ankle deep in the swamp and wait...

Hummingbird migration is somewhat unique. They do not migrate in flocks. The same individuals may return to your feeder each year following migration. This individualistic flight behavior contributes to their survival in greater numbers through the avoidance of massive kills by such natural threats as storms.
Because hummingbirds do not tolerate cold temperatures well, they begin a southern migration as sunlight hours diminish.

Honey bees are essential to plant survival through their function of pollination. These social insects live in colonies of workers, headed by a queen. Wild colonies build hives in wild sheltered locations while many colonies are found in man's domesticated hives. Adults feed on nectar and honey. Larvae are fed a mixture of honey and pollen by workers. Colonies can live for a period of years, sheltered by hives through winter and summer.
